﻿{"id":157,"date":"2013-01-08T10:26:18","date_gmt":"2013-01-08T10:26:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/?p=157"},"modified":"2013-01-08T10:31:30","modified_gmt":"2013-01-08T10:31:30","slug":"digital-saxons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/2013\/01\/08\/digital-saxons\/","title":{"rendered":"Digital Saxons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of my &#8216;when I get time&#8217; projects has been doing up a digital version of the sword pyramids from Sutton Hoo.\u00a0 They&#8217;re a set of small (18x12mm) pyramid fittings associated with the Sutton Hoo sword.\u00a0 Garnet cloisonne in gold, about 600AD.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/2013\/01\/08\/digital-saxons\/sh-pyramids\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-158\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-158\" alt=\"Sutton Hoo Sword pyramids\" src=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/files\/2013\/01\/SH-Pyramids.jpg\" width=\"750\" height=\"545\" srcset=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/files\/2013\/01\/SH-Pyramids.jpg 750w, http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/files\/2013\/01\/SH-Pyramids-300x218.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/a> The real Sutton Hoo Sword pyramids\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve got a client who wants a set of them as cufflinks.\u00a0 It also seems like it&#8217;s a good excuse to sit down and force myself to get better with Rhino.\u00a0 The final goal of this is to have them printed for direct burnout and casting in silver, followed up with enamel. \u00a0 I&#8217;m including a CAD version of the backing foils, largely to see how far I can push the output printer before it breaks.\u00a0 The backing foils on the original pyramids are .020mm thick gold sheet with a die-struck grid pattern of 4.25 lines per mm.\u00a0 (Or 235 microns, peak to peak.)\u00a0 (Bloody well tiny, in other words.)\u00a0 The output printer promises resolution of 30 microns, so it should have enough resolution to do something meaningful with the grid pattern.\u00a0\u00a0 I&#8217;m not entirely sure the investment can pick it all up, but there&#8217;s only one way to find out.<\/p>\n<p>The first step was actually to make a CAD version of the die, and then to create a sheet of &#8216;digital gold&#8217; (trademark pending, nach.)\u00a0 Rhino has a command that very accurately simulates the effect of die striking that sheet of &#8216;gold&#8217; into a lead pad, using the aforementioned die.\u00a0 I used that to get the sheet &#8216;formed&#8217; into something that looks very much like electron microscope photos of the real foils.\u00a0 The &#8216;foil&#8217; sheet is 18x18mm across, with a mesh of 500X500, for 250,000 control points.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/2013\/01\/08\/digital-saxons\/foil-die-wireframe\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-180\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-large wp-image-180\" alt=\"Die and foil, in wireframe\" src=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/files\/2013\/01\/foil-die-wireframe-1024x525.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"525\" srcset=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/files\/2013\/01\/foil-die-wireframe-1024x525.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/files\/2013\/01\/foil-die-wireframe-300x154.jpg 300w, http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/files\/2013\/01\/foil-die-wireframe.jpg 1622w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a> The &#8216;die&#8217; in blue, with the purple sheet of &#8216;digital gold&#8217; above it. Looks very much like electron micrographs of the real thing.\u00a0 I fussed with the die a bit to add some of the &#8216;imperfections&#8217; of the real foils.\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>In the images above, you can see the die, and the foil produced from it.\u00a0 The foil&#8217;s been flipped over, as it was normally used with the die facing side up.\u00a0 I also modified the die slightly to add some of the &#8216;imperfections&#8217; to the foil.\u00a0 The real foils are almost inhumanly accurate, especially for the time period, but the cutter wasn&#8217;t a perfect &#8220;V&#8221;, so the shape of the grooves in the die isn&#8217;t exactly what you&#8217;d expect.\u00a0 I made sure to allow for that when I built my die.\u00a0 It doesn&#8217;t show at the scale you&#8217;re seeing it on the overviews, but it&#8217;s there.\u00a0 Whether or not that shows up in the final product is an open question, but I had to try.<\/p>\n<p>The next step was to build the pyramid, and the cells for the garnet cloisonne.\u00a0 The idea was to use copies of the &#8216;foil&#8217; to form the backs of the cells, so that they&#8217;d cast in place, rather than me having to make them up for real after the parts are cast.\u00a0 The foils in the real pieces are sometimes oriented randomly, and sometimes oriented in ways that look deliberately set so that each cell catches the light differently than its neighbor.\u00a0 Since I had the technology, I decided to orient all my cells such that each cell is oriented differently.\u00a0 Won&#8217;t know how well that works out until the final castings, but it was worth trying.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/alberic\/2013\/01\/08\/digital-saxons\/pyramid-pers-view-cplanes\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-164\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-164\" alt=\"Pyramid with garnet cells inset in red. Note the orientation of the foil grid in the rear of the cells.\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One advantage of doing a very accurate CAD model is that sometimes, even a digital reproduction can give insight into how the real ones were made.\u00a0 Prior to Staffordshire, very few sword pyramids were known, and it was difficult to figure out exactly how they were made.\u00a0 The Sutton Hoo pyramids are a miracle of cryptic stone setting, and they&#8217;re still holding fast to their secrets after 1400 years in the dirt.\u00a0 They remain in pretty much perfect shape, so it&#8217;s impossible to be sure exactly how the stones in the corners were set.\u00a0 I have my theories, which I believe to be correct, but until the full Staffordshire information comes on stream, nobody but those three lovely ladies in Birmingham will know for sure.\u00a0 Meanwhile, I discovered something once I got to this stage in setting up the model.<\/p>\n<p>None of the cells in the Sutton Hoo pyramids are loose, so no one knows exactly how deep they are.\u00a0 So I guessed, at 1.6mm.\u00a0 Once I had all four sets of cloisonne cells in place, (for something north of one million control points.)
