In this test I tried to solder a sterling earpost to the solder fused area on sheet #4 with an additional fresh solder pallion to aid in flow. I fluxed with prip’s and paste flux at the joint. It appeared to flow satisfactorily. After cooling however when the earpost was flicked with a fingernail it began to crack away from the sheet. When examined under magnification the crack area was very granular in appearance so I am guessing that the joint area had a brittle intermetallic structure that would not withstand any strain.
