After pickling and beadblasting sheet #5 I grabbed the earpost with pliers and twisted it three full turns and it held with no apparent issues with the joint. I would be ok with this as a reasonable solder joint for finished work. The main problem at this point is the surface degradation from soldering and flux would be a real pain to clean up. There is quite a bit of surface etching from the heavy heat oxidation and flux stains. So this technique may be of limited use.
