The strands of copper are entwined together, as our lives twine together. The golden patina was made with torch heat and a dye solvent. \u00a0Like all the work I&#8217;ve made for this sanctuary, the handles are lacquered to preserve the patina, and to minimize maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>The first piece that I made for this sanctuary is the Eternal Light (Ner Tamid, in Hebrew&#8212; The Eternal Light symbolizes God&#8217;s constant presence with us. \u00a0This light is always lit&#8212;it may be electric, or lit with oil or a candle. \u00a0In any case, it is a requirement in a synagogue, needed in order for services to be held.)<\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl>\n<dt><a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/4-eternal-light-tembethabraham.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-272\" src=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/4-eternal-light-tembethabraham-220x300.jpg\" alt=\"From Generation to Generation\" width=\"220\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/4-eternal-light-tembethabraham-220x300.jpg 220w, http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/4-eternal-light-tembethabraham.jpg 471w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 220px) 100vw, 220px\" \/><\/a>\n\t<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">From Generation to Generation<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The chains that I made for the suspension of this light inspired the design that was chosen for the handles. \u00a0Each link of each chain is a forged taper, creating hanging &#8220;vines&#8221;. \u00a0The theme for this synagogue is L&#8217;Dor Va Dor, which means &#8220;From Generation to Generation&#8221;. \u00a0It is intentionally ambiguous whether the forms look like flames or plants&#8212;-I like to give people something to ponder.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">The second commission from the synagogue is the wall menorah, Generations:<a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/5-menorah-generations.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-276 \" src=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/5-menorah-generations-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"Generations\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/5-menorah-generations-211x300.jpg 211w, http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/5-menorah-generations.jpg 423w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<div class=\"mceTemp mceIEcenter\">\n<dl>\n<dd>This wall sculpture is 4 feet tall, lit from behind with fluorescent bulbs. Each piece is made separately, and individually attached to the wall. \u00a0The &#8220;grunt work&#8221; of the synclasting (stretching the metal along the big &#8220;bulge&#8221;) was done with my 50-ton Bonny Doon hydraulic press, &#8220;Thor&#8221;. \u00a0Then I hand-finished each piece with traditional silversmithing hammering, planishing, texturing, and forming.<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<\/div>\n<p>The third commission was to make a wall sculpture that is inspired by Psalm 151, which is about workshipping with joy and music.\u00a0 Here is Dancing Hallelujah:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/6-dancing_hallelujah-wall_sculpture-cynthia_eid1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-293\" src=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/6-dancing_hallelujah-wall_sculpture-cynthia_eid1-300x164.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\" srcset=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/6-dancing_hallelujah-wall_sculpture-cynthia_eid1-300x164.jpg 300w, http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/6-dancing_hallelujah-wall_sculpture-cynthia_eid1-1024x562.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/ceid\/files\/2010\/09\/6-dancing_hallelujah-wall_sculpture-cynthia_eid1.jpg 1092w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This is the largest piece I&#8217;ve ever made.\u00a0 The &#8220;musical staff&#8221; is made of 6 foot-long forged bronze rods.\u00a0 The sculpture is mounted an inch or so away from the wall, which creates dancing shadows.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">I am looking forward to attending a service at this synagogue again.\u00a0 As you might imagine, it&#8217;s an incredible feeling!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently installed the fourth commissioned piece for this synagogue&#8217;s sanctuary. \u00a0I am very proud and pleased!
