Night Opals

by michaeljohnson on June 1, 2011

In my garden, the moon is spider-webbed with cosmic rivers and tributaries, the wood glows with an incandescent shimmer, and the snake basks in its celestial glow.  That is, if you walk through the garden at night.

In the moonlight, the plants seem to defy gravity by just hanging in space, reaching up.  The color of the trees, or shadows of the trees seem to glow, and shimmer as you move, reds, greens, and purples, yellows. Like an adamooka opal.

Night Opal Necklace: Sterling silver, Andamooka opal, koroit opal, amethyst, peridot on a hand-woven Viking weave sterling chain. 19.5″ long, but can be sized to custom size, up or down.
The center piece is 3.25″ wide by 2.5″ tall.

I cut all of the opals and heat-sugared the Andamooka, and forged and fabricated the settings and branches. I also hand-wove the chain and fabricated the findings.

I love Andamooka and its shimmer of color as it moves, which is very hard to capture in a picture. But, this round koroit, with it’s seems of fiery color really set this one off. I was going for a very textural, woodsy feel to the piece, like a walk through the woods under a full moon.  Welcome to my garden 🙂

Nice piece of jewellery. Never heard the term “koroit opal” before as only known it as Yowah opal. Can’t see the Andamooka in the photo.

Thanks Steve,
sorry about the delay in responding to your comment. They’ve changed the format here, and I’m still figuring it out.
Yep, doing well, and busy. Keep in touch 🙂
