Spectrolite and Dragons

Disclaimer:  Read only if you have a fairly flexible sense of humor.

Yep, if you came to this post expecting to learn something, better your spiritual understandings, or just get an insight into the world of jewelry, I apologize.  I’m also sorry if you thought that maybe you’d find a universal truth.  But, all I’m posting today are these two examples of jewelry made with only a ratchet and a hammer.  That’s it, just those two things, nothing more.

Spectrolite Drop Necklace

Spectrolite Drop Necklace: sterling silver, spectrolite, and a ruby on a handmade chain.

I just like to challenge myself, trying new things, keeping my skillz fresh.  ANYONE could make something like this using all of those new high techy tools that you could buy from Rio Grande or Contenti.  Saws, Flex-Shafts, and those luxurious files just clutter the creativity.  Don’t get all hooked into the idea that if you buy the latest and greatest, that you’ll instantly become the next Picasso.  This is what those corporate demons want you think.  Don’t fall for it, or you’ll become just as bad as one of those Apple Mac morons that thinks that sleek and shiny makes them better computer users.  Bunk, I say, bunk.

Dragon Drop Necklace

Dragon Drop Necklace: Sterling silver, fire agate, and rubies strung with variegated tourmaline beads

I want to be the Iron Chef of jewelry.  Give me a crow bar and a Bic Lighter and I can make you something nice out of a few coins and a chunk of gravel.  That’s skill.  Anyone could make stuff out of tools.  Even a monkey could be trained to set a stone if they had tools.  That’s just too easy.

I could show you how I did this, but that’s pretty obvious.  If you’re someone who has to be “shown” how to do something, then you’re just not going to get it anyway.  This kind of thing is just doled out at birth.  If you have to be shown how to make something, then maybe metals and lapidary just aren’t what you were born for.  You might try something easier and more dogmatic, like accounting or brain surgery.  Oh, you could always play with metals and rocks as a hobby, so don’t get down about it.  Perk up, and accept that tools suck, and if you want to be an artist, then you’re probably not one already.  And, we have enough artists in the world.  Sorry.

Some of you know what I’m talking about.  You get it, and you were born with it like me.  :::wink, wink:::  So, just accept your role as a cubical type person, and keep on scanning the online Rio Grande or Contenti catalogs when your boss isn’t looking.  Keep on dreaming.

I think my next creation will be an gold wedding band made with only Elmer’s Glue and a rubber band ;o)
