Typically, a piece is fired as few as 6 or as many as 70 times, each firing with a new application of enamel. Students will use Cloisonné techniques where designs are created by separating the glass colors into cells outlined by fine wires of copper silver or 24k gold. In Basse-taille enameling students will manipulated an metal surface to produce a textured field. The texture can be created by traditional engraving, stamping, hammering, repousse, chasing, or shallow etching techniques. The metal is then covered with layers of translucent enamel. The textures underlying the enamel create deep reflections and color tone changes within the piece. Completed enamels can be set into individually built in our Fabrication or Casting classes

Instructor: Erica Druin

Cost: $485.00

Next Course Offered:

(6/8/11 – 7/27/11) Wednesdays: 6:00pm – 9:00pm

Advanced Fabrication:

This course is designed for students with considerable design experience and fabrication skills. Students will focus on projects involving advanced stone setting techniques with hands on demonstrations throughout the course. Tube, bezel, beaded and flush setting will be demonstrated and practiced as well as creative combinations of techniques such as the use of forged textures, patinas and keum-boo (the ancient Korean appliqué technique of fusing 24K gold foil to silver). The first hour and a half of each class in weeks 2 thru 7 will focus on instruction in specific techniques, with the remaining time for practice and guided development of individual projects.

Instructor: Michael Schwartz

Cost: $485.00

Next Course Offered:

(6/9/11 – 7/28/11) Thursdays: 10:30am – 1:30pm & 6:00pm – 9:00pm

Casting 1:

Students will learn basic design, layout and wax work for lost wax centrifugal casting.
