Getting my hammering mo-jo back

by laurie jane kern on November 25, 2010

Despite it being almost a month from the smashing event, I have realized that I was still a bit hammer shy and was avoiding starting a new piece.  This being Thanksgiving day, I am off from work and have no company to cook for, it seemed the perfect time to start something new.

Over my morning coffee, I pondered the question: “What would be nice to make but not too complicated so I could have a nice feeling of accomplishment?”

First Answer: Make a silver version of the Dish-J.
Second Answer: Raise a simple silver cylindrical form.

After the smashing event, it took more than a wee dram to mellow me out. But last night, having one and watching some ‘Punkin Chunkin’ I was very mellow!

Glad to hear you are taking considering up the hammer again. Today I am working on the raising piece and starting to refinish some of the 17 hammers (one lot) I snagged on ebay. Pictures will be posted soon

A “wee dram of scotch” should help mellow out the stress somewhat don’t you think? It is sometimes hard to get started again after such an incident isn’t it? I took a look at your progress, looking good! It has been a challenge for me to once again to take hammer in hand and start raising a bowl. It has been oh so long since I have attempted to fully raise one. I have done just little bits of it in my jewelry the last twenty plus years but with the steep increase in silver prices I thought it would be nice to attempt it again. This is frustrating, so far no hammers have been thrown through the wall.
