Fascination with Fold Forming

by laurie jane kern on December 27, 2010

A year ago, I took a class where we did some fold forming and learned to use a hydraulic press. The folding forming was a basic T-fold and then we used the press to deform the T-fold. We used the folded metal with a semi-circular die, to spread the fold open and to create depth for our finished piece.

I had not planned on taking that class but because I cancelled another one, I took this class instead only to find out about the hydraulic press. Afterwards I was pleaseantly surprised because I like the pendant I had made and I had learned two new techniques.

Ha, ha, like the one you threw the hammer at! I know that was mean but I just love to try new things with metal. I think I’m approaching 10,000 ways taht don’t work all that well in working with metal for jewelry making.

Edison once said this when asked about the light bulb:
“I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

The same is when learning things; if you never try it how will you know if you like doing it OR what you don’t like. Already I have ideas about incorporating some fold forming into partly raised vessels.

What’s this? Fold forming? Corrugating? Oh boy, have I had a time on that path! It is just so hard staying on one path isn’t it? Well I guess it’s all one path if it’s lined with metal isn’t it? My poor wife gets so frustrated with me at times, just when she thinks I have finally settled into one method of metal working, there I go off on another tangent. Poor dear lady, now thinks she know where my children inherited their propensity for attention deficient disorder. She is always telling me if I would stick to one thing maybe they would too. Not a chance when it comes to metal, there is just much fun to be had!
