There has been a lot of talk lately (well, complaints really) about mistagging on Etsy, which results in wonky categorization and frustrating searches. I believe that most mistagging is done by people who do not understand how to use tags according to Etsy’s rules. I propose this very simple way of reducing mistagging on Etsy. It consists of asking a few simple questions each time a new listing is created.
I propose also doing away with “suggested tags” because, quite frankly, most of them end up being rather silly.
Perhaps after the user selects the main category, the subcategories should be listed, but no more suggested tags after that.
See the flow chart below (No, I’m not graphics genius…) and see what you think.

Yes this is along the lines of some of the discussions we’ve been having here, too. Any changes we make will be carefully thought out & proposed to the community for feedback beforehand. Thanks for the clear visualization!
That works!
I like it alot, Lava! Would go a long way to eliminate errors by the people that don’t mistag on purpose.
If we could have some kind of “list similar” feature like eBay has, I’m sure it would save a lot of listing time for a lot of people. The “list similar” would include not only tags, but also shipping, description, etc.
This looks like a GOOD start. It would accomplish what you desire. However, I would simply like to see the ability to re-use Tags for similar items, so one would not have to go through the laborious process each and every time one lists an item. We can save shipping profiles, why not tag lists?
