Featured Etsy Shop: VerreEncore

by micheledodge on January 2, 2008

Today’s featured Etsy shop is VerreEncore, a shop featuring one-of-a-kind, handmade enamel jewelry, including necklaces, pendants, and earrings.

I asked the owner of VerreEncore a few questions about herself and her work.

Tell me about yourself.

A name is a good place to start; I’m Lynsey Phelps, 23 years-old, and currently reside in the Illinois countryside. I spent a greater part after college graduation, working as a waitress and traveling the globe in hopes of tapping into my passion. I’ve honed in on creating jewelry using enamels, and have since devoted all my time to it. I love anything related to history, people, art, and culture. With enamels, the process dates back to ancient times, so while my pieces have a modern flare, I feel connected to the past.

I’m currently looking to attain a Master’s degree in art therapy to share the healing powers art possesses with others. Art offers great expression without words, as I’m sure any artist could tell you.

What inspires you in your work?

While the larger spectrum of my work is influenced by history and travels, much of my jewelry is inspired by everyday appreciation for colors, forms, and objects. We’re constantly bombarded with different images that float pass our consciousness. I try to slow down or freeze that cognizance allowing a miniature preservation to examine colors, layers, delicate curves, geometric forms, and silhouettes of common images.

Take the ‘Fields of Gold’ pendant (see above) for example. A simple exaggeration of a silhouette, presented in brilliant color, asks others to stop and really look at the prairie grass. How many times do you walk past grass and not think anything of it? The jewelry is unique enough to spark this curiosity, but remains quiet enough to not overpower their wearer.

How did you name your shop?

Finding a name was actually the hardest part of making my jewelry an official “business.”

I thought about the origins, the roots, of my medium. Enameling was virtually perfected by the French with their elaboration and ingenuity of different enameling techniques. I found it only fitting for my jewelry’s name to reflect its heritage. Viola, the French words verre and encore jumped out at me.

“Verre,” meaning “glass,” and “encore” meaning “again,” were a match made in heaven: VerreEncore: GlassAgain.

Where is your work available for sale?

My work is available online in my Etsy shop, VerreEncore.

Since my business is so new, it isn’t available in many venues. In the near future I plan on approaching boutiques and other shops, attending art shows, fund-raisers, and doing home jewelry parties. As always, if you’re in the Peoria area, feel free to stop in, I’m always making something new in my studio! 😉

I aim to make each piece a simple, memorable and wearable work of art.
