﻿{"id":1641,"date":"2014-11-26T20:19:11","date_gmt":"2014-11-26T20:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/metalwerx\/?p=1641"},"modified":"2014-11-26T20:19:11","modified_gmt":"2014-11-26T20:19:11","slug":"student-spotlight-america-cutter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/metalwerx\/2014\/11\/26\/student-spotlight-america-cutter\/","title":{"rendered":"Student Spotlight: America Cutter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jeweler and perennial student America Cutter took her first class at Metalwerx in 2009.\u00a0 At that point in her life, she had a young daughter, and had been making beaded and wire-wrapped jewelry for a few years.\u00a0 (Beading and wire wrapping are, of course, widely viewed as the \u201cgateway drugs\u201d to a full-fledged passion for metalsmithing.)\u00a0 After that class, she knew metalsmithing\/jewelry making was what she wanted to do, but realized that she couldn\u2019t fully take it on just then.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metalwerx.com\/blog\/11-14-America-2.jpg\" alt=\"Midnight Druzy Bracelet\" width=\"425\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Midnight Druzy Cuff Bracelet<\/em><\/p>\n<p>America had studied fashion design in undergraduate school, and worked in the industry for a couple of years on Newbury Street.\u00a0 She also had an MBA, and had worked in the corporate and finance world for 15 years.\u00a0 With this background, she took a savvy approach to her career as a professional jeweler.\u00a0 Confident in her talent and her product, she established her business and trademarked her company name, Camla.\u00a0 She also established her line of jewelry as a presence on Etsy.\u00a0 She came back to Metalwerx in 2013, taking Directed Open Studio with instructor David Baird.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metalwerx.com\/blog\/11-14-America 4.jpg\" alt=\"SoWa booth\" width=\"425\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>America&#8217;s SoWa booth<\/em><\/p>\n<p>In 2010, she applied to SoWa Open Market operated by New England Open Markets in Boston\u2019s hip South End neighborhood, a weekly Sunday market from May through October bringing together local artists, designers, crafters, farmers and food trucks.\u00a0 She was accepted as an exhibitor, and thus began a routine of doing, in effect, 10 to 12 craft shows the first season.\u00a0 By 2011, America was doing well over 50 craft shows each year, and her business is going strong.\u00a0 Along the way, she has educated herself in the business of jewelry \u2014 marketing and the fine points of selling \u2014 as well as challenging herself to learn new techniques and grow in her metalsmithing skills.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.metalwerx.com\/blog\/11-14-America-1.jpg\" alt=\"Camla studio\" width=\"425\" height=\"425\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><em>Camla studio<\/em><\/p>\n<p>America works in her beautiful studio at Stonybrook Fine Arts, an arts center and studio space in Jamaica Plain.\u00a0 Her goals for the next couple of years are to establish her own website with a new collection of jewelry, to enter high-end shows, and perhaps to begin wholesaling her jewelry.\u00a0 She says, \u201cMetalwerx has been such an invaluable resource for my growth.
