about\u00a0&#8220;craft&#8221;?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial;color: black;font-size: 14pt\">What comes to your mind when you think of the word &#8220;art\u201d?<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">I\u00a0saw an interview of a young and emerging studio jewelry brand in the local newspaper last week (in Thai).<span>\u00a0 The jewelry looked quite modern and artsy.\u00a0 <\/span>As I was reading the interview, I was bothered by one word that a jewelry maker\/designer used to describe her jewelry&#8211;craft.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>For some reasons, from the first look at the photos of jewelry displayed in the paper, I was actually thinking of the words \u201cart and design\u201d and \u201cwearable art\u201d rather than \u201ccraft\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a small\">At one point, the designers (there are two designers working together here) described their jewelry work as miniature art&#8211;which to me conflicted with the idea of craft that I pointed out earlier. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">Is it just me that feels that the word \u201ccraft\u201d is not the best choice of word\u00a0here?<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0At least in Thailand&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\"><strong>What is craft?<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"><span>Handicraft, also known as craftwork or simply <a title=\"Craft\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Craft\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\"><strong>craft<\/strong><\/span><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> is a type of work where useful and decorative devices are made completely by hand or using only simple tools. Usually the term is applied to traditional means of making goods. The individual <a title=\"Artisan\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Artisan\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\">artisanship<\/span><\/a> of the items is a paramount criterion, such items often have cultural and\/or religious significance. Items made by <a title=\"Mass production\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mass_production\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\">mass production<\/span><\/a> or machines are not handicrafts.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">Usually, what distinguishes the term handicraft from the frequently used category <em><a title=\"Arts and crafts\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arts_and_crafts\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\">arts and crafts<\/span><\/a><\/em> is a matter of intent: handicraft items are intended to be used, worn, etc, having a purpose beyond simple decoration. Handicrafts are generally considered more traditional work, created as a necessary part of daily life, while <em>arts and crafts<\/em> implies more of a <\/span><a title=\"Hobby\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hobby\"><span style=\"color: windowtext;text-decoration: none\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">hobby<\/span><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\"> pursuit and a demonstration\/perfection of a creative technique. In practical terms, the categories have a great deal of overlap.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">(Wikipedia)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span lang=\"EN\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-size: small\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman\">I think the distinction between \u201chandicraft or craft\u201d and \u201carts and crafts\u201d is the word \u201ccreative technique\u201d.<span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><strong>Thailand&#8217;s craft<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">In Thailand, when people talk about craft, they mainly think of simple woven baskets, local and traditional pottery, etc.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>These objects are meant to be used so the purpose of their designs is the practicality.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>If one goes to a craft fair in Thailand, one will not find studio jewelry like the jewelry we are discussing here. One will find jewelry made with traditional techniques and styles that has been made in the same manner for many decades. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/tanim\/files\/2009\/07\/e0b896e0b8a1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-244\" src=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/tanim\/files\/2009\/07\/e0b896e0b8a1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"109\" height=\"82\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/tanim\/files\/2009\/07\/e0b981e0b89ee0b89fe0b894e0b8b0e0b882.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-249\" src=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/tanim\/files\/2009\/07\/e0b981e0b89ee0b89fe0b894e0b8b0e0b882.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"115\" height=\"81\" \/><\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\">\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;font-size: small\">To me, if the designer have had used the word \u201chand-made\u201d, I would not have thought twice about it.<span>\u00a0 <\/span>\u201cHand-made\u201d is a more neutral word that doesn\u2019t alienate the concept of creativity.
