The TIJT Recap

by parisjc on March 29, 2013

The month of March is coming to an end which means another month down for the students and faculty of TIJT. The month was filled with many important events, such as the final meeting for the Stuller trip on March 6th , and the following day was the last day of the second quarter meaning that the Spring Semester is half complete. The next week was Spring Break and the department and campus enjoyed a week long holiday.

On the last day of the break, March 17th, some of the students along with Mrs. Calloway left early in the morning for the Stuller convention in Lafayette, Louisiana. This renowned event took place over a three day period from March 17-19th.  There was a phenomenal turn out with many vendors, learning classes/opportunities, tours, networking/socializing opportunities, and equipment buys.

During the time of the convention, March 18th began the start of the third quarter. First semester work consisted of making wedding bands while second semester left repair behind and began casting. In third semester students worked on stone setting for the illusion top rings, while fourth semester started to prepare for the important JA test which will begin on March 28th. CAD/CAM practiced advanced milling and Gemology began the study of diamonds!

On the other side of jewelry, the horology students stayed just as busy. In first semester horology, the students began staffing. In second semester they worked on friction- jeweling over coil hair springs, and the third semester watch students began work with the Jacot tool. To add to all of the learning processes and excitement, the second learning luncheon took place on March 26th.  Fourth semester jewelry student, Steve Duncan, taught macramé which is the constructing of bracelets with hemp cords and beads with different types of knot styles. This technique has become extremely popular and the products in very high demand. Wow! So many things happened in March. What about April?..

NOW FOR SOME INTERESTING FACTS:

  1. The two birthstones for March are aquamarine and bloodstone.
  2. A piece of jewelry that depicts the human figure and can sometimes be applied also to cartoon and fictional characters along with animal and other living creatures is known as figural jewelry.
  3. The name diamond comes from the Greek word Adamas, which means indestructible or unconquerable.
  4. The reason engagement rings are worn on the third finger of the left hand is because the ancient Egyptians believed that the vein in that finger ran directly to the heart.
  5. Did you know that people have been swallowing precious Pearls whole and in a powdered form for ages as a medicine for sicknesses? This is mostly done in Asia, but the interesting fact about this is, that Pearls are mostly made of calcium carbonate, which is an antacid, so about the only thing they are curing is a upset stomach.
