I’ve been so busy lately I haven’t had time to post anything for a couple weeks, but I was so happy to read the following in JCK online that I just had to encourage each of you to follow the link and read this article: http://www.jckonline.com/2011/12/21/beware-glass-filled-ruby-trade-warns
I want you to know that this has been the result of a lot of hard work and perseverance by members of the Accredited Gemologists Association — and also by people like Robyn Hawk and many of YOU who have been helping to spread the word through such things as “Social Media” and word of mouth. So as a result of this combined effort we are actually beginning to see significant results…and this press release shows a very positive change in terms of agreement that lead-glass/”ruby” composites are an artificial product (see my earlier post).
So while we still have a lot of work ahead of us to help retailers understand that they may be buying these in manufactured jewelry pieces without even knowing it, I was delighted to see this “trade alert.” I recommend that any retailer who isn’t confident about knowing how to spot them be sure to send random samples to a major gem testing lab for an “identification” report on any manufactured jewelry that contains rubies today. And also, look for workshops that are being offered to teach you how to spot them!
And may the holiday season and the new year be filled with sparkle…in all those things that really matter!
