I am excited that Sutton Tools in Birmingham, England has sold out of their first order of the delrin anticlastic stakes that I designed with Betty Helen Longhi.  The stakes are made by Brian Meek, who works with Lee Marshall of Knew Concepts.  The finish quality on these tools are evidence of what a fine jeweler Brian Meek is.  In the United States, these stakes can be purchased from Allcraft, in NY  (phone 1-800-645-7124 or email allcrafttool@yahoo.com).  Sutton’s flier, which tells about the stakes, and gives their contact information, is below. (Click on it a time or two to enlarge your view of the flier.)

Soldering Argentium Silver Posts to Earrings

by Cynthia Eid on July 29, 2011

It’s interesting how the human mind works. As I was walking my dog today, I was pondering the issues involved with soldering Argentium Silver posts. The difficulty is that Argentium Silver is fragile when it is red-hot. So, it can be difficult to solder the end of the post without pinching and breaking the post. As I walked, I had one of those “Eureka!” moments. I think that the solution is to slip a piece of copper, brass, or steel tubing over the top half of the post, and hold the tube with tweezers. I am so excited about the idea, that I had to share, even though I haven’t had a chance to try it in the studio. I think that students in the workshop that I am teaching  August 3-7 at Metalwerx, in Waltham, MA will be pleased. By the way, there is room for two more people in the class. Here’s a link to an interview about it:http://userblogs.ganoksin.com/metalwerx/2011/07/01/argentium-silver-microfolding-fusing-and-mithril/

I Love Teaching AND Metalsmithing

February 27, 2010

I was recently asked by a craft school’s press department to write something about myself, why I like to teach at their school, and why people should take classes at their school.  Having done so, I thought I’d share it.  (I’ve made a few changes for this wider audience.) I earned a Master of Fine […]

Remembrance of Nancy Howland, an Orchid friend

January 15, 2010

Last night, I received an email from Nancy Howland’s daughter, telling me that Nancy died December 12, 2009. Nancy was my friend via Orchid.  We “met” when she posted about some difficulties and successes with granulating fine silver. I remember excitedly suggesting that she try granulating with Argentium Sterling, which had recently become available in […]
