The material is unique in its properties&#8211;bright white and more durable than tungsten carbide, according to research by Kay and others&#8211;and in its origin; BioBlu 27 for jewelry was born from a collaboration between Kay, Edward Rosenberg, president, Spectore Corporation, Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Carpenter Technology, Wyomissing, Pa., a maker of metal alloys&#8211;some 450 to date.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>The BioBlu 27 material is an alloy of 65 percent cobalt, 29 percent chromium, and 6 percent molybdenum. It <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span>is bright white in appearance, and can be cast and\/or milled, as well as inlaid with precious metals. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><span><span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"http:\/\/dailyjewel.userblogs.ganoksin.coms\/wp-content\/plugins\/wp-o-matic\/cache\/87441_175321-Scott_Kay_unveiled_a_jewelry_line_featuring_the_new_metal_BioBlu_27.jpg\" style=\"float:left;margin:0 10px 10px 0;width: 150px;height: 214px\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jckonline.com\/article\/366871-UPDATED_Scott_Kay_Spectore_and_Carpenter_Technology_Unveil_BioBlu_27.php?nid=2054&amp;source=link&amp;rid=15168191\"><span><span>In a true nod to the power of &#8220;social media&#8221;  &#8211; comments to the article alluded to the meaning of the name as several posters thought it was &#8220;blue metal&#8221;,  Ms. Heebner was able to post the update below for clarification. <\/span><\/span><\/a><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<p><span><strong><span>UPDATE: <\/span><\/strong><span>The name does indeed come from the metallurgists at Carpenter. \u2018Bio&#8217; refers to the biocompatibility of the material, which can be used in medical applications such as prosthetics, and \u2018Blu&#8217; refers to the cobalt in the material.
