Jewelry Arts Institute’s Student of the Week- Sarah Blumenthal

Congratulations to our latest  Student of the Week- Sarah Blumenthal.  These fab earrings were made from wax and I thought their design was appropriate for today, Valentines Day.  A few weeks ago  I was discussing the virtues of using both metal and wax techniques for freedom in design.  I thought we could go into a bit more detail about what medium is best for what effects.

Sarah used hard green carving wax to make these hearts.  Green carving wax is great for three dimensional forms.  You can start with a block,  trace out your basic outline and with nothing else but a file and saw and maybe a couple of burs,  make any design you like.   These great earrings are a perfect example of putting wax to it’s best use.  Trying to make this same design in metal would be very difficult and a lot more time consuming.  With wax,  Sarah could make decisions as she went.  Letting the piece speak to you as you go along can be a really fun and creative process.  Working in metals tends to be less forgiving and requires more planning.  We will keep talking about the strong points of using wax and metal techniques in design but here is to Sarah.  Well done!
