It occurs in pretty much any color you can imagine, and it is commonly banded. Onyx with red banding is called sardonyx. Solid black onyx is perhaps the best-known variety of onyx. Onyx has a hardness of 7 on Moh&#8217;s hardness scale.<\/p>\n<p>The name <a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/search_results_shop.php?search_type=user_shop_ttt_id_52143&amp;search_query=onyx\">onyx<\/a> is often erroneously applied to  banded calcite found. True onyx can be easily distinguished from this impostor by its hardness. Calcite is much softer than onyx.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.etsy.com\/view_listing.php?listing_id=8141303\"><img><\/a><br \/>\n<i>One of my latest creations: wire-wrapped faceted black onyx necklace with a wire wrapped labradorite pendant.
