Blue topaz<\/a> is December’s beautiful birthstone. Blue topaz<\/a> is known by various names, depending on its shade of blue. Pale blue topaz is called sky blue, medium deep blue topaz is known as Swiss blue topaz, and the deepest blue topaz is called London blue.<\/p>\n

Topaz is an aluminum fluorosilicate mineral that is formed by fluorine metasomatism (a low-grade metamorphic process). It is commonly found in alluvial (river) deposits because of its hardness. Topaz has a hardness of 8 on Moh’s hardness scale (where diamond is a 10). Topaz is often colorless, but also forms in a variety of colors, including pale blue, yellow, and brown. Most blue topaz<\/a> on the market has been irradiated to enhance its color.<\/p>\n
