﻿{"id":122,"date":"2012-08-22T16:13:34","date_gmt":"2012-08-22T16:13:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/martens\/?p=122"},"modified":"2012-08-22T16:13:34","modified_gmt":"2012-08-22T16:13:34","slug":"fold-forming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/martens\/2012\/08\/22\/fold-forming\/","title":{"rendered":"Fold Forming"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Fold forming is a technique for jewelry creation developed principally by <a href=\"http:\/\/brainpress.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Charles Lewton-Brain<\/a> in the mid 1980\u2019s.<\/h2>\n<p><strong><\/strong>It is a modern procedure and a revolutionary method of metalsmithing.\u00a0 It is based on the concept of using the characteristics of the metal to achieve a form.\u00a0 There are several divisions of fold forming.\u00a0 The specific technique that I use is called rolled fold.<\/p>\n<p>In the rolled fold a sheet of metal is folded one or more times.\u00a0 The folded metal is run through the rolling mill and then unfolded.\u00a0 A rolling mill has two parallel steel cylinders.\u00a0 The top cylinder can be lowered against the bottom cylinder.\u00a0 The metal run through the mill becomes progressively thinner as the distance between the cylinders decreases.\u00a0 The areas with more layers &#8211; thicker \u2013 will stretch more than thin areas.\u00a0 The resulting form may have some very thin areas but the curved lines that are a result of rolling give structural strength.\u00a0 The rolled fold piece is much stronger that a sheet of metal of the same area and thickness.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/martens\/files\/2012\/08\/Whipped-cream-color-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-124\" title=\"Fold Formed Sterling Silver Bracelet &quot;Whipped Cream&quot;\" src=\"http:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/martens\/files\/2012\/08\/Whipped-cream-color-3-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"&quot;Whipped Cream&quot;\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/martens\/files\/2012\/08\/Whipped-cream-color-3-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/martens\/files\/2012\/08\/Whipped-cream-color-3-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/userblogs.ganoksin.com\/martens\/files\/2012\/08\/Whipped-cream-color-3-1024x1024.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The extraordinary volumes produced with the rolled fold method yield striking and visually intriguing forms.\u00a0 The lines are organic and flowing, seemingly repetitive, but never the same.\u00a0 Each piece of jewelry is individually hand crafted.\u00a0\u00a0 A design can be reproduced but there will be slight variations in the product.
