World Rural Women\u2019s Day Award\r\n\r\nWorld Rural Women\u2019s Day October 15, 2002\r\n\r\nThe Artcamp rural womens artisans cooperative in Mexico\r\nhas been Awarded the Prize for Women\u2019s Creativity in Rural Life\r\nfrom the Women\u2019s World Summit Foundation in Geneva Switzerland\r\n\r\nThe Women\u2019s World Summit Foundation\r\n( WWSF) has announced the 2002 winners\r\nof the Prize for Women\u2019s Creativity in Rural Life.\r\n\r\nThe rural womens artisans cooperative, ArtCamp, of Tecalpulco, Taxco, Mexico, \r\n\r\nnominated by Global Marketplace (a Rocklin, California, nonprofit marketer of handmade crafts\r\nfrom developing nations) is one of the groups chosen to receive the prestigious award.\r\n\r\nArtCamp was honored for its creative use of modern digital technology\r\nand for its social projects with Tecalpulco\u2019s fresh water commission\r\nand on behalf of the Taxco public hospital.\r\n\r\nOn the Artcamp website the cooperative presents\r\na bi-lingual study of the Aztec Calendar for use by shoolchildren;\r\n\r\nArtcamp has also written a romantic e-novel with graphics\r\ntaken from the faces and scenes of Tecalpulco and Taxco.\r\nIt is about a young village girl whose heart is stolen by a macho bull-rider.\r\n\r\nThe cooperative was founded by village women in response to the crisis\r\ncaused by the fact that their men have mostly all migrated to he United States as illegal wetback labor.\r\n\r\nAccording to the Comisario of Tecalpulco, 156 adults are in the United States this summer. \r\n\r\nMany men make new families in the years that they are gone.\r\n\r\nHandcrafts production is traditional livelihood in Tecalpulco.\r\n\r\nThe women have fallen back upon jewelry-making to sustain themselves and nourish their families.\r\n\r\nWWSF, a humanitarian, non-governmental and international, non-confessional and\r\n\r\nnon-profit organization with United Nations consultative status (ECOSOC, UNFPA\r\n\r\nand DPI), works for a new development paradigm with and for women and children.\r\n\r\nRural women all over the world play a major role in ensuring food security \r\n\r\nand maintaining stability in rural areas.
