The Beauty of Moonahs

by Suzanne on May 11, 2011

On Tuesday my Moonah stumps were inspected by two representatives from the local “Men’s Shed” and I don’t know why but I was apprehensive they wouldn’t be suitable.  It was suggested that, bark removed, the wood is stunning and perhaps I could turn the stump on its side and utilise natural Moonah contours. Well, once that penny dropped I was beside myself with the endless possibilities. In fact I got so excited I’m sure the gentlemen in my backyard were convinced that I really need to get a life! The base will be flattened and mounted onto a platform with wheels that will fit under a bench when not in use.  Kind of like my library catalogue draws which are brilliant. I love them as tool drawers!  I’m happy to report that I am actually working at the bench. I’m onto my second project and feel like I’m finally getting unstuck (see Stuck post). What I like about this workshop photo is that there are two cups of coffee and two pairs of glasses so I’m obviously getting down to the nitty-gritty!

If anyone had said to me a few years ago that I’d be working on something that involved Moonahs I would have asked: “What are Moonahs?”

The stumps came from Victoria Park: The Memory of Trees and if you want to know more about the struggle to preserve these trees visit  Moonahs Not Mulch on Facebook.

Yes, my wife at times thinks I definitely need to get a life and quit exploring textures. I finally found that the termites had eaten up my stock of textured wood scraps so I guess I can stop dreaming of pulling molds of them know and not worry about using them in my jewelry. A friend of mine suggested that I just learn the necessary repousse skills necessary to replicate them in metal rather than trying to cast them, it involves much less metal but more time. So many projects, so little time left in life.
