Primitive Method – May Roundup

by Jamie Hall on June 1, 2010

It’s been a bit of a slack month for the blog – real life seriously got in the way. My wife is 20 weeks pregnant, and we had to relocate her office into the dining room, amongst other things. I’ve started to get the toolkit together by scavenging, but there’s a lot more work to do yet. The next obvious step after that is tool-making, which I’ve begun to explore by re-chiselling the draw-tongs at work. Tool-making should be the main focus for June.

I’ve also looked at polishing materials, chemicals, and safety. I think that I’ve covered the major groups of tools and substances now, although saws and drills need to be looked into. Otherwise, what remains are mostly miscellaneous tools like scales, ingot moulds and vices. But having just written that, I can see that each deserves study – in particular, weights and measures would make for a good post.

Sadly, I’ve not been able to get work started on the workshop, which will have to wait until I can get help from a friend. If that doesn’t look forthcoming by the end of June, I’ll have to resort to the father-in-law. I’ve planned what I want, and I need it ready before summer is gone, to make best use of the good weather.

At work, I’ve had a go at making wire using the strip-drawing technique described here. I’ll do a writeup for that in the next couple of days, and hopefully look at other methods of making wire after that.
