Sharing my notes on Earrings

I have been doing some research on my own to learn more about body piercing. I would like to share this simple research on Earrings, the most common and oldest form of Body piercing with you.

An earring is a piece of jewelry attached to the ear via a piercing in the earlobe or another external part of the ear (except in the case of clip earrings). Earrings are worn by both sexes though are more commonly by women. Some Cultures, like in India and other Southeast Asian Countries, ear piercing is followed with a religious ceremony.

Common locations for piercings, other than the earlobe, include the rook, tragus, and across the helix. “Ear piercing” usually refers to an earlobe piercing, whereas piercings in the upper part of the external ear are often referred to as “cartilage piercings.” Cartilage piercings are more complex to perform than earlobe piercings and take longer to heal.

Earrings can be made with a variety of materials, including metal, plastic, glass, precious stones, beads, wood, and bone etc. Designs range from small loops and studs to large plates and dangling items. The size is ultimately limited by the physical capacity of the earlobe to hold the earring without tearing. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earring).

In today’s time, Earrings are more than just decorative jewelry – It is a personal style statement by both the sexes. While fancy, jeweled earrings are often reserved for evening wear, every other shape and style can be worn with any fashion, either casual or formal, night or day. There are varieties of designs available to mark the different occasions like Vacations, Weddings, parties, traditional Functions, Religious Ceremonies etc. Earrings also are a favourite Gift Item in all ranges. Earrings can enhance a hair style, dangling down with flowing long hair or accentuating a short bob. (http://www.wisegeek.org/what-are-the-different-types-of-earrings.htm). In India, the gold hooped earrings are most commonly gifted and worn by infant girls.
