About Cold Spring Studio

Cold Spring Studio, conceived in 2004, is a professional art studio in Maine dedicated to providing one of a kind, beautiful, and functional jewelry, vessels, and other objects.  Areas of special focus include mokume-gane, mixed media, unusual metals and woods.  Special attention is given to responsible use of resources, respect for the artisan community, and service to the customer.

Mokume-gane, or “wood-grain metal” is a rare specialty in the world of the metalsmith, a life-giving material and a fuel for the artist’s creativity.

All mokume-gane is made in the studio beginning with pure metals.  Patina recipes are made from their basic ingredients.  More information on mokume, its history, creation, patterning, and coloring can be seen at Cold Spring Studio.

Edward Simkins

During his liberal education at the University of Rochester, Ted studied art, architecture, writing, film and biology.  He later received his DVM from Tufts University School of Veterinary Medicine.  Also an experienced woodworker, he creates furniture in the studio during his spare time.  Mokume gane became a focus of intensive study after realizing the creative freedom and transformative nature of this wonderful material.
