#GandG Summer 2015 Gems & Gemology: A Focus on Gem Inclusions

Summer 2015 Gems & Gemology
A Focus on Gem Inclusions

The beauty and value of inclusions, double stars,
and corundum from Tajikistan

The Summer 2015 issue of Gems & Gemology (G&G), GIA’s quarterly professional journal, takes a deep look at gem inclusions, including how they are documented using modern digital photography and image-processing software, how some interact with light inside a fashioned gem to produce a rare form of asterism, and the value that might be gained by studying them. The issue, which also debuts a new quarterly column on gem inclusions called “Micro-World” and features an examination of corundum from Tajikstan, is now available in print and online.

G&G’s cover story “Digital Photomicrography for Gemologists” offers basic image-capture techniques and tips to get the most out of gem photomicrographs by applying digital processing. The article by Nathan Renfro, analytical manager of GIA’s gem identification department, builds on the landmark 2003 paper by his longtime mentor and master of inclusion photography John Koivula, GIA’s analytical microscopist, to offer a highly practical and relevant guide for the gemologist.

Next, a team led by independent researcher Dr. Karl Schmetzer offers a comprehensive description of the dual-color “double stars” observed in some natural sapphire, ruby and quartz, as well as synthetic corundum, including diffusion-treated examples. The issue’s third article, by Dr. Elena Sorokina of the Fedorovsky All-Russian Research Institute of Mineral Resources and her coauthors, provides an update on the geology, mining and internal and external features of ruby and sapphire from Snezhnoe, Tajikistan.

The issue also features G&G’s regular Lab Notes and Gem News International sections, which include entries from the 2015 Tucson shows and a report of the recent Maine pegmatite workshop. In the inaugural “Micro-World” column, section editors Nathan Renfro, Elise Skalwold and John Koivula provide concise reports accompanied by stunning photomicrographs of specially chosen specimens, inviting gemologists to take a closer look at the astounding beauty and variety of inclusions in gems.

G&G’s free archive containing every issue from 1934 to present, more in-depth coverage, hundreds of additional photos, and exclusive video footage are available on GIA’s website at http://www.gia.edu/gems-gemology.

Amnesty International Report Brings Out World Diamond Council Statement in Response

October 8, 2015

from Press Release Issued by WDC

World Diamond Council Issues Statement in Response to Amnesty International Report

The World Diamond Council (WDC) has issued a statement in response to the recently published report by Amnesty International focusing on the global diamond supply chain and the Central African Republic.

In its statement, the WDC urges Amnesty International to engage with the Kimberley Process (KP) and work together with the KP participating governments, the industry and the Civil Society Coalition of the KP to achieve the goal of zero conflict in the rough diamond supply chain.

The full text of the statement follows:
“As the representative organization of the global diamond and jewellery industry at the
Kimberley Process, the World Diamond Council (WDC) is the first to agree that there is more
work to be done when it comes to managing the global diamond supply chain. While the vast
majority of diamonds contribute a significant benefit to the countries in which they’re
produced, as an industry we are committed to staying the course until we reach the goal of
zero conflict diamonds.

We welcome the recommendations in the Amnesty International report and are working
together as an industry in full support of the goal of zero conflict. In addition, governments
must assert their control in mining areas and along their borders to prevent smuggling.

However, the Amnesty International report ignores the careful and conscientious framework being put in place in CAR. Interim arrangements regarding future CAR diamond exports and green export zones have been approved by the Kimberley Process and the Civil Society Coalition of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, who have in addition commissioned an outside company to audit the stockpile.

We also applaud the Antwerp Diamond Office’s strict control mechanism for each import or
export of diamonds. Their close monitoring led to the interception and seizure in 2014 of two
shipments containing rough diamonds from the Central African Republic. This is an example of our members’ commitment to ensuring the integrity of the industry.

Amnesty International has been a member of the Civil Society Coalition of the Kimberley
Process in the past. We invite them to participate by re-engaging with the Civil Society
Coalition.  We will continue to encourage the industry, governments, the UN, and NGOs to
work together to improve the Kimberley Process and the international monitoring of the
process, so that the goal of zero conflict diamonds can be achieved.”

About the World Diamond CouncilThe primary objective of the WDC is to represent the diamond industry in the development and implementation of the regulatory and voluntary systems to control the trade in diamonds embargoed by the United Nations or covered by the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme.  Visit http://www.worlddiamondcouncil.org to learn more.

#JCKEvents Design is Main Focus for JCK Events in 2016 – JCK Brings in Two Industry Powerhouses

September 27, 2015
JCK Events Gains Two Industry Powerhouses to Support Design as Main Focus for 2016

JCK Events is proud to unveil its design strategy for 2016 with two additions to the JCK team, an alternative retailer focus, and enhanced offerings. “Now, more than ever, jewelry retailers are looking for designers that have integrity of product and process and JCK wants to be the destination for it. We’re aiming high this year and working with the industry’s best to re-imagine and elevate our offerings to the designer jewelry community in 2016,” states Katie Dominesey, Industry Vice President for JCK Events.

High on the list is the addition of Jacqueline Stone as Design Consultant to JCK Tucson and JCK Las Vegas Design Center. Stone will be the eyes and ears for the designer community. An impressive resume, Stone is the founder and lead designer of Salt + Stone, a fine jewelry company based in Brooklyn, NY. She was named one of New York City’s Design Entrepreneurs, and has a diverse background in finance, marketing, merchandising, production, product development and fine jewelry including Tiffany & Co. Product Development. Stone can also be seen and heard in the industry as a speaker for The Gemological Institute of America’s Lecture Series along with contributing to her weekly columns in National Jeweler’s Designer’s Diary and The Good Men Project, Evolution of Love.

Michelle Graff, Editor-in-Chief of National Jeweler commented, “I’ve told Jackie this in person and I’ll say it here, if she wasn’t designing jewelry, she definitely could have a successful career in writing. Her columns are well written, insightful and engaging. I am so proud to see her working as a consultant with JCK. I know she’ll be a great asset, both to the shows and to the designers themselves.”

iDazzle’s Monica Stephenson participated in the Blogger Panel at the 2015 JCK Talks

“In my role as Design Ambassador, my job is to help both jewelers and retailers alike get the most of the shows. I’ll be scheduling appointments, helping retailers discover new talent and most importantly getting small jewelry businesses the attention they deserve. I’m a huge fan of building community and it’s an honor to be included in this dynamic team,” stated Stone.
In addition to bringing Stone on board, JCK will also be backing its efforts by collaborating with a newly formed Design Advisory Group including: Patricia Faber, Aaron Faber Gallery; Zdena Jiroutova, Z Folio Gallery; John Carter, Jack Lewis Jewelers; Andrea Riso, Talisman Collection, and Catherine Jensen, Michael Jensen Designs. Also joining this all-star group will be Monica Stephenson from idazzle. This group is the sounding board for ensuring JCK is vetting exhibitors of high-caliber and creating value with its events.

Stephenson is well known in the industry for her blog idazzle.com where she covers the jewelry industry from an insider’s perspective. At idazzle.com, Stephenson delves into the true inspirations of jewelry designers, along with reporting trends in the fine jewelry and emphasizing the significance of adornment to readers.

JCK’s design spaces at both JCK Tucson (February 3-7, 2016) and JCK Las Vegas (June 3-6, 2016) will undergo extensive makeovers in 2016 offering curated, one-of-a-kind finished fine jewelry in ambient and inspiring destinations. New to 2016, JCK Tucson and JCK Las Vegas will introduce a hosting program for elite design-focused retailers. “Acknowledging that designers are not necessarily looking to be carried in only traditional jewelry stores, we have scoured the industry finding the best galleries, boutiques, and alternative retailers. We are investing in our shows and making sure that the right retailers are not only attending, but hosted at our properties in Tucson and Las Vegas,” echoes Dominesey on her design-focused strategy.

JCK is also investing in unique looks for its design sections. Both JCK Tucson and JCK Las Vegas are getting a makeover with new booth design and layout. JCK Las Vegas’ new chalkboard-styled booths and non-linear floor plan will allow designers to draw and show off their inspiration with a unique community feel. Tucson has revamped its offering utilizing two ballrooms, one curated Design ballroom and one Custom ballroom with technology and loose gemstones. JCK Tucson has improved the vetting process of its exhibitors and its transportation to other shows to ensure both the high-level of exhibitors and convenience of the February event.

Dominesey finishes with “Overall, it’s a very exciting time for JCK. We’re adding design competitions, creating events to bring people together, working hard to understand the retailer— essentially re-imagining what it means to exhibit at a tradeshow at any stage in a designer’s career. We want to push ahead of what the norm has been and bring some excitement back. JCK is invested in Design and with the collaboration of people like Jacqueline and Monica, it makes the experience not only relevant, but fun.”

The Daily Jewel 2015-09-09 03:16:00

September 9, 2015

from a Press Release by company representatives

American Gem Society and Jewelers Mutual

take “Sharing the Rough” documentary
on a cross-country tour

The American Gem Society (AGS) announces a unique collaboration with Jewelers Mutual Insurance Company (JM) in bringing Orin Mazzoni’s new documentary film, “Sharing The Rough,” to the public across the country in a series of exclusive screenings beginning early September 2015.

This unique and evocative film documents the never-before-captured journey of a colored gemstone as it travels from mine to market, while also sensitively exploring the challenges and opportunities of an emerging mining economy in East Africa. Co-hosted by the AGS, JM and local AGS Guilds, the private and public screenings are spanning from the East to West Coasts starting in September and running through the winter. Each screening will be followed by a Q&A session with a “Sharing the Rough” team member. Additional screening dates are available and can be scheduled by contacting local AGS Guild leadership.

“We are excited to make this inspiring film available for viewing in local markets around the country,” says Ruth Batson, CEO of the American Gem Society and AGS Laboratories. “The film features the designer, Mark Schneider, as well as the cutter, Roger Dery, both members of the AGS. Having access to the rich, visual imagery of the mine-to-market journey of a gemstone is sure to inspire consumers and gemologists alike, revitalizing our genuine affection and admiration for Mother Nature’s most highly acclaimed treasures.”

The 85 minute film has won a number of awards at film festivals around the globe and creatively explores the stories of individual artisans throughout the supply chain, from miners to cutters to jewelry designers. The director, Orin Mazzoni, himself hails from a third generation family jewelry business, and they are also long-standing AGS members. “Sharing the Rough” is his feature directorial debut, and has proved to be a perfect melding of his two passions: gemology and filmmaking.

“The film truly embodies our mutual passion for jewelry,” said Trina Woldt, Chief Marketing Officer at Jewelers Mutual of the collaboration with AGS and Mazzoni. “History is important to jewelry owners and the story behind the jewelry is what makes no two pieces alike. Those who see Orin’s film will look at their jewelry in a whole new light.”
