Yosemite, Part 1

by micheledodge on September 9, 2007

I spent Thursday, Friday, and Saturday camping in Yosemite National Park with my brother Michael. I’ve spent a lot of time at Yosemite in the past, but it was always for the purpose of doing geology field work. This is the first time I was able to go there, and just relax, enjoy myself, and take hundreds of photos. Of course, I found myself making observations about the geology too. Geology is deeply ingrained in me. My poor brother had to listen to all of my explanations about how this had formed, and how that had formed… blah, blah, blah… I’m glad he didn’t decide to abandon me in the park.

Vernal Falls is a 300′ high waterfall, which while beautiful, is much more impressive in the spring.

A stellers jay begs for my lunch (as do a couple of squirrels and chipmunks, not pictured here.)

Typical view of the 3000-foot high walls of Yosemite Valley. Impressive, eh?

Michael relaxes for a few minutes.

Coming Soon – Part 2 of our trip to Yosemite…

Question of the Day: If you’ve been to Yosemite, what’s your favorite part? When is your favorite time to go?

Paul really likes to go climbing.

We haven’t been camping yet. I’m sure he’ll like it though.

As to moving back to the States, I might be next summer.

Then again, next summer I might be getting a 11.5K a year raise in Korea…

Kevin, move back to the States so we can go to Yosemite! Does Paul like camping? Does Pat?

If Michael and I had hiked up above Vernal Falls, there was a pond up there called Emerald Pond, and further up, a MUCH bigger waterfall called Nevada Falls. I’ve gotta get Michael to come back with me in the spring when the falls are huge and impressive.

I like camping, but not at campgrounds. Of course when you go to places like Yosemite (national park), the campgrounds are the only places you’re allowed to camp. BLM land is great, because you can just make your own campsite in the middle of nowhere. That’s my ideal type of camping.

I would like to go to Yosemite sometime.

I recently went up to the top of the Chinhae mountain with Paul. He really enjoyed the plant life. The veiw wasn’t too impressive for him though.
