Packing and frustrations de los muertos

by margarita on October 27, 2008

It’s an interesting task to try to pack a working studio.  Obviously, I need to pack up all but the most essential of my toys, ahem, tools.  Some tools that I once used often, have been the first to return to the box.  After a year here, there are still a select few tools that haven’t even seen the light of day (vacuum caster).  I think it’s time for a swap or perhaps a few posts on Craigslist.  A purging maybe in order… though I will have more room to work with in the new place, so perhaps they will all get set up and used!  Casting party at my house! Eventually! 😀

As usual, I am trying to wrap my head around entering shows.  I usually find out about them too late to formulate and execute a worthwhile idea.  I recently saw a Call to Artists for a Dia de los Muertos show at Maude Kerns Art Center.
I thought it would be super fun to do a triptych or maybe even more colorful enameled sugar skulls.  I just finished the first one.  Everything about it was ruled by Murphy’s Law.  It is warped.  I knocked the enamel out of place many, many times.  It chipped and I pierced the end of my finger deeply with the glass. I just cannot imagine making another at this point, much less several.  I went in with a KISS* attitude  (using handmade stencils and acrylic enamel paints) and found it to be not simple in the least. grumble grumble grumble. Now I come to the part in my blog where I can show off my hard work (even if it doesn’t look like I envisioned) and the batteries in the camera are dead.  How apropos!

I’ll charge them and post later.

Now do I have time to do something for the Mayor’s Art Show? hrm…
