More Nevada Opal

by richardcarew on January 21, 2010

The Virgin Valley is in Humbolt County, Nevada in the northwest corner.  In western Humbolt County there are a couple of precious opal mines along the Calico Hills.  Opal forms in basalt nodules and vesicles that have clear, orange and red opal showing a rich plaay of color in purples, blues, greens, yellows and reds, mostly in  green and reds..  Sorry no photos.

On the east side of the Monte Cristo range north of the small town of Gabbs in Night County is the Star Fire opal mine producing a blue-gray body color opal with a blue, green, red play of color.  It is reportedly stable unlike most Nevada opal

Firestone in Humbolt County, this opal deposit is located in the Santa Rosa Mountains north of Winnemucca.  The site has been inactive for some time now.  Precious opal is found in basalt vesicles and comes in a wide range of background colors ranging from white through orange, red and black.  The play of colors are red, green and blue.  There are a number of other deposits around the state too numerous to mention here.  Besides I don’t know of any of them personally or know any one who had gone to one unlike Mexico, Australia, and Brazil.  Brazil is coming up after Spencer, Idaho where I’ve also been.
