Gerry Lewy’s Biography

Plain and simple this is my history and why I am here writing. Nothing more!…Gerry!

After a lengthy apprenticeship of 9 years, I advanced to the level of “Journeyman” in one of Canada’s major jewellery company. It was at this span of another of 14 years, I learned all of the intricacies of Diamond Setting. I learned from my mentor who had the patience of showing me all that he learned in “Hatton Garden”, London England.

“Hatton Garden” is similar to New York’s 49th street jewellery centre.

After spending 15 years subcontracting stone setting, I felt the need to teach those who have the desire to learn from a mentor. I spent the next 12 years teaching in Canada and USA and giving seminars to over a thousand individuals. During this time, I have written over 650 pages just on Diamond Setting. These setting essays have gone to over 14 countries and the need is still there to instruct the newer generation.

To communicate and let the student understand all of the innuendos of stone setting, is a skill in itself. I found that all of my students shared the same need, that need was to learn. No matter the country, age or gender, students want to learn stone-setting.

The need to design any form of jewellery, that person must and should learn this setting skill. Why? Mostly all patterns these days come with gemstones. It is very easy to create a pattern and give the setting to a stone-setter, so why not do this stone setting yourself? This is just why I am here, to teach and to explain in a very basic language!

Hi Gerry,

I was scheduled to take your workshop class at the 92nd Street Y last month & was SOOOOOOO disappointed when it was cancelled. Even more so last week when a stone setter disregarded my instructions & essentially ruined the prongs on 3 rings. Was it my fault? Could I have made the ring better if I knew more? Certainly. But could he have done the setting as I wanted? I think so. Most importantly, could I have set the stones myself? Having taken some classes you I feel I could have.

I watched your 4-prong setting videos on U-Tube and long for more. Do you have a schedule of classes or workshops?

Thanks so much,
Michele
