I have tried several types of Fire Brick, and each has served its own purpose. There is the traditional firebrick to help conduct heat and provide a sturdy work surface. There is the ultra-soft block; I’m not sure what it is made of since it was given to me. I want to say its Gypsum, that works great if you need to carve crevasses for things such as hinges. Then there is my favorite, the Fire Block I purchased from Fire Mountain Gems.
This one is softer than the traditional, but not as soft as the ultra-soft. This one can also be carved out if needed, but I don’t usually do that so no biggie. Some of the best things about it are that when you fire it, it doesn’t fall apart like the ultra-soft one.
It also really seems to conduct heat evenly and doesn’t burn up.
It is soft enough that you can stick a T-pin in it pretty far down, definitely further than a traditional brick, but not as far as the ultra-soft.
Another good thing about it is that it leaves very little residue on your hands.
Ultra-soft
Fire Block
This product gets a big thumbs up from me. I haven’t had as much luck soldering as I have been since I started using this Fire Block.
