Rosewood Large-Hole Woven Wire Drawplate

by Tahira Designs on August 5, 2012

One of my favorite techniques in making jewelry is the Viking Knit. I’m not sure why I love it so much, but I seem to not be able to get enough of it. It’s so simple to make and looks so elegant.

I use 28 gauge fine silver wire, an old wooden spool (trick my friend showed me) and my awl. I know, how can something to beautiful come from such primitive tools, right. I’ll do a more in depth how to if people are interested.

To finish the piece you of course have to draw the knitting down, so I bought this Rosewood Large Hole Woven Wire Drawplate from Rio Grande.

I ended up having to drill extra holes in it to draw the knitting down far enough, so I wasn’t too happy with it. I’m not sure why you would need that large of holes for Woven Wire work, but maybe there’s a technique out there that I don’t know. All in all, it did what it needed to, but I just wasn’t that thrilled with it.

They do have another drawplate that seems to have smaller holes, perhaps that’s the one I should have bought, or better yet, just made one myself. Hindsight is 20/20 as they say.

Because of the need to drill more holes, I’m pretty neutral about this drawplate. If they hadn’t given the details about this plate, I’d give it thumbs down, but it’s not Rio’s fault it didn’t fit my needs.

This reaffirms why I’m doing these reviews. Just by looking at it online, I thought I would work, but in fact it didn’t work for me.
