About Gerry’s Blog

As a Diamond Setter for the past 53 years and previously written for Orchid for over 12 years, I have amassed a myriad of stone setting techniques. My other setting essays have assisted many students in community colleges across Canada and the U.S.A. During this time I have traveled to over 55 cities training and teaching this highly skilled art form. I try not to go lightly on “the do this and do that, without the why…and all important…HOW?”

You, as a ‘blog reader’ will come across detailed techniques that are overlooked in some trade-schools, or even on the premises of workshops. Why? I feel they could be spending too much time dealing with the finer details, only the “overall picture” of diamond gem-stone setting.

My essays will fill that gap in fully explaining each technique. My essays should be used “as a guide” while you are learning your new skills,…wherever you learn them.

This on-going posting on “Gerry’s Blog” will delve into the numerous topics in the many weeks to come.
I have also over 14 topics just on “Helpful Setting Techniques”. Extra topics will range from; “Channel Setting”, “Gypsy/Flush Setting”, “Safety measures to be taken at your bench”, “Baguette Setting”, “Retail Disclaimer when taking in jewellery”. Including topics on “What the setter must look for ‘before’ starting a resetting project”. How to set a Cabochon stone while using a modified, round-bur”, “How to resharpen H.S.S. Burs”. “How a modern stone-setting bench is organized”

I have also included “What the many basic diamond setting tools are” and how they are applied to your jewellery/setting bench! I have posted another interested topic on “Setting Stones in Wax” I have written many topics directly to the retail store!

Not forget my favourite topic on “Bright Cutting”, “Bead Setting”, “Graver Sharpening and Shaping”, “Initial polishing of the graver”, “How to Raise Beads”.

I have also inserted past articles that have appeared in many American trade magazines. These include the “Bench”, “AJM” and the “MJSA” magazines. I will also post my “Archived, Orchid Letters” with topics just for the many problems that setters could and will encounter!
