Women and Fire

by jaywhaley on November 23, 2009

I’ve had many comments, most from women, bothered about my observations about my female students and their fear of fire.  My observations come from almost 30 years of teaching students, and believe me, if anyone is working to empower women to make whatever they want with tools (including torches ), then that would be me.

Now, if anyone thinks that horse handling, cooking over a gas range, lighting a bonfire, helping put out a forest fire, or shooting a gun is the same as using a torch in a metalsmithing studio, then excuse me very much.  Please.

Yes, I make some very carefuly generalized statements, but they are based on years of helping people get over their fear of fire, and learn what an important  (and safe to handle )tool a torch can be.

I think women are much more vocally safety conscious. Not that men don’t pay attention to safety, but I think women ask more questions and express more concerns, rather than keeping them inside.

I know I worry and have not purchased larger torch equipment for my studio because I’m sharing space with my home and family.

Still generalizing is never safe. I can see you getting a lesson in careful speech this month!
