How Insured Jewelry is Replaced Really Matters

Beware of the pitfalls when you insure your jewelry—not all jewelry insurance policies are equal.  Begin with a good appraisal by a qualified appraiser, shop carefully, and ask the right questions.

The big deal about blue diamonds

The recent buzz about the 7-carat Cullinan Blue diamond to be offered at the upcoming Sotheby auction in Geneva and the record setting sale of the Wittelsbach Blue by Christies in December 2008 has generated a lot of interest in colored diamonds.

These ultra-rare Type IIb diamonds are truly distinctive– besides their blue color, they are the only diamonds that conduct electricity. The Premier Mine of South Africa is one of the few mines with a relatively notable production of blue diamonds.

Natural blue diamonds are properly described as Fancy Blue, etc.

How much does jewelry insurance cost?

Many people mistakenly believe that jewelry insurance is really expensive or that their homeowners insurance covers their jewelry.  Most jewelry can be insured for 1 to 1.5% of replacement value per annum in most areas of the USA.  Homeowners policies leave a lot to be desired in the way of jewelry coverage, so we suggest adding coverage with a rider on the homeowner policy or a separate policy for jewelry such as GemShield.  Get the facts at http://www.mardonjewelers.com/blog/jewelry-facts/jewelry-insurance-101-b

100% Recycled Gold

Mardon Jewelers has been an active gold recycler for many years.  Like many jewelers we purchase “old” gold from our clients and send it to our refiner for recycling.  See our Blog, Pharaoh’s Gold…

We’re proud to announce our new relationship with the nation’s leading “green” refiner, Hoover & Strong, producers of 100% recycled precious metals under the Harmony brand.  We urge all jewelers to consider going green.  Read our full post at http://www.mardonjewelers.com/blog/ and check out Hoover & Strong and Harmony at http://www.hooverandstrong.com

Why it’s so Important to Keep your Jewelry Clean!

Ring

There are many jewelry owners out there won’t don’t realize how important it is to clean and properly maintain their jewelry.   Without proper upkeep, precious stones and jewelry items can look worn or dull and become very difficult to clean if left untreated.

For example, diamonds can attract carbon atoms from lotions and skin oils that will stick and harden to the stone, making it difficult to remove the buildup.   Other jewelry items like tennis bracelets are especially prone to oil and residue buildup because they are difficult to take off.  Many women don’t bother to clean these items causing their jewelry to look older than it really is.

There are some simple solutions you can use to maintain your jewelry items, keeping them shining bright and beautiful for years to come on this blog posting.

The Impact of Enhancements on the Value of Gems

At a recent meeting of the Orange County GIA Alumni, I got the opportunity to hear Richard Drucker of Gemworld International speak on the topic of gem treatments disclosure and how treated gems are priced in the marketplace.

Heavily treated gems are never to be considered top quality, and in general moderately enhanced gems are the general standard for Gem Guide pricing.  However, what is considered “moderate treatment” varies from gem to gem.

In an attempt to clarify some of the many enhancement techniques and their effects, check out my detailed post over at the Mardon Jewelers blog called The Impact of Enhancements on the Value of Gems.

What makes a True Padparadscha?

When I was a young gemologist, I fell in love….with Padparadscha.  Over my career I’ve had the privledge of seeing and working with many wonderful specimens of this amazing sapphire, and over the years my love has only grown.

The recent sale of a very fine natural non-heated Padparadscha inspired me to write an explanation of the origins of and definition of the color of Padparadscha sapphires.  Numerous pictures of fine Padparadscha sapphires illustrate this article.

You can read all about this Padparadscha and many other wonderful gemstones on the Mardon Jewelers Blog.

Why You Shouldn’t Wear a Flawless Diamond

At Mardon Jewelers, we often get the opportunity to appraise and re-appraise diamonds for our customers.

Recently, we re-appraised a beautiful diamond ring and had some unsettling news for our client.  Wearing a flawless diamond can devalue it!  I saw this as a great opportunity to educate our customers about the realities of diamond grading, re-grading and diamond resale, and diamond wear.
